Praise Him in the dance. – Psalms
149:3
In September 2000, a few interested adults got together with God’s
Gift of Creation (GGOC), our youth praise dance ministry, for a special
ministry at our First Women’s Conference in October. Our church family
was so blessed by this special ministry that our Pastor, with his vision,
encouraged this ministry to continue. Some of us were very reluctant to
seriously take on this responsibility. After all, it was a one time special
occasion. Yes, there is "power in prayer" and with a lot of prayer,
encouragement, and a love for dance, the adult praise dance ministry took
a step to the next level.
On March 26, 2001, our former music director, Bro. James Ford, along
with Sis. Jackie Barrett , Sis. Pat Henry and Sis. Yevonna Johnson, held
an interest meeting for adults who wanted to express giving praises to
God through dance. About 25 interested adults (male & female) attended.
Henceforth, D.A.V.I.D. was birthed into our church family. D.A.V.I.D. originally stood for Devoted Angels Victorious in Dance, but at our first
ministry opportunity in May 2001, an anointing service, our Pastor “forgot” our
name. Pastor Barber, never at a lost for words, presented us as Divinely
Anointed Victorious in Dance, and that is what this ministry has been
since that day --- divinely anointed victorious in dance.
The foundation of this ministry is prayer. We not only dance together,
worship together, share our praises and blessings together, cry together,
but we pray together. The age range of male and female adults has been
between 19 – 60+ yrs. We minister through all forms of dance, dramatic
interpretation, and in mime --- from praise and worship to hip-hop gospel.
We have traveled from New Jersey to Alabama sharing the gospel message
through our ministry of dance. Military assignments and family responsibilities
placed demands on our ministry leadership in December 2001, but we were
already victorious. Through fervent prayer, in March 2002, Sis. Dena
Boyd accepted her calling as one of ministry leaders along side with
Sis Jackie Barrett .
In January 2004, Deacon Baraka Patterson, our first and only male for
three years, inspired other men to dance before the Lord. A special presentation
in mime was ministered to our church family in March 2004. These men
ministered with some much anointing that they have been affectionately
called our “Mighty Men of D.A.V.I.D” because men can praise
God and still be called men.
In December 2006, Ministry Leader Sis. Dena Boyd relocated to be with
her husband. Prayer changes circumstances and in January 2007, Sis. Lisa
Brunson was anointed and appointed to assist in ministry leadership.
We continue to equip ourselves with the tools to master our life with
Christ as the center by attending weekly Bible Study, completing Mastering
Life classes and staying in the Word daily in our personal spiritual
development. Our priorities as a dance ministry are first making Christ
the center of our life, to the leadership, mission, vision and core values
of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, to each other, to our church family,
and then to the public ministry of dance. May souls be blessed through
our ministry as we “Dance Like DAVID danced.”
